Why 3 on 3

On The Pond 3 on 3

On The Pond 3 on 3 Hockey League's goal is to provide a platform where hockey players can develop their skill sets in a challenging and fun environment.

Hockey is a game of time and space. The games will be played on a half ice surface (cross ice) with rink dividers. The fast paced game on a smaller ice surface will challenge players to execute skills and make decisions at a higher rate of speed and under constant pressure. The player must adopt creative offensive play, better vision and puck handling skills, quicker reaction time, read and react as well as one on one play.

The math is easy….more ice time, more puck time, and more time being involved in central-playmaking. More 1 on 1 challenges offensively and defensively!  More direct attempts on goal. More passing, more receptions, more transitions, more awareness.  And all of this at a faster tempo in a smaller area allowing players to intensify their game and improve their core skills in a fun environment which is often overlooked.

From Hockey Canada:
From IP/Novice to the NHL, small area games, 3 on 3 in particular, are being implemented to foster speed, agility,  creativity and most importantly, involvement in the game!  Playing on a smaller surface with fewer players allows everyone in the game to get more touches on the puck, more opportunities to make plays, develop more skills and have more fun!

From the IIHF:
The key playing benefits of cross ice are that it promotes creativity, creates an environment for self-learning  hockey, increased player participation, speeds up the learning process,  improves decision making skills so the player reads and acts quicker, maximizes skill learning and development, increases tempo, creates a positive environment and a passion to play.

3 on 3 small ice hockey- Goaltenders:

Small ice 3 on 3 hockey exposes the goaltender to a wide variety of game situations including cross crease passes, screens, deflections and a wide variety of 2 on 1 plays. This variety enhances the goalies ability to read the developing play, make accurate decisions and then respond with a well-coordinated plan of attack.  It is not uncommon for a goaltender to receive 80-100 shots during a 3 on 3 on the small ice since they are always in the play and the threat of a shot on net is always possible.

From a mental standpoint 3 on 3 small ice hockey enhances the goalie concentration skills since a shot on net is always a possibility at any time and from any location.  This forces a goalie to be alert and on their toes from the drop of the puck to the final buzzer.  The proximity of the puck to the net and the threat of a shot at any time does not allow the goalie to drift off into space and allow their mind to wander when the play is at the other end of the ice.

Finally, 3 on 3 small ice hockey is a form of over speed training for goalies.  Since their ability to read and react to a shot is limited due to the close proximity of the shot release to the net, and the urgency with which the goalie must initiate their post save recover response after making the initial save.  Any form of training that forces the goalie to move quicker and get to position, react quicker to make the save and then recover quicker to regain optimal position is the ideal form of training.  These are precisely the benefits that 3 vs 3 provides to the goaltender.
